How To Go From Motorcycle Mechanics To Web Development With No Code

Do you hate your current job and wish things were different? Normally, people spend 40 to 50 years working. That’s a lot of time to be doing something you hate. Let our student’s story inspire you — read how she started her career in dental prosthodontics, then became a motorcycle mechanic, and now is planning to conquer marketing with her new-learned no-code skills

Imagine waking up each morning feeling energized, excited to start the day, and bursting with positivity. The secret to endless motivation might be closer than you think...

If you’re looking for inspiration, you have come to the right place. Our student Célia is an example of how even after years of working at the same job, it’s important to keep moving, find and try new things. In almost two decades of her multifaceted career, Célia has worked as a dental prosthodontist, motorcycle mechanic, and CNC machinist. All these jobs brought adventures and new opportunities to her life, but the passing years pushed Célia to start fresh.

Now, Célia is starting a new path — no code and marketing. And she’s happier now than she’s ever been. No code has opened a new world of creating digital products and the possibility of working in marketing. This is a story of how to change your career from a prosthodontist and mechanic to building websites and apps and planning to work in marketing.

Multifaceted career

Since Célia was a little kid, she wanted to do something that involved robotics, mechanics, and engineering. She was also interested in medicine, so when the time to pick a degree came, she chose dental prosthodontics. She fulfilled her dream of working in the engineering field as each procedure of restoring teeth required precision and an understanding of the human body mechanics.

She worked as a dental prosthodontist for 13 years, and for the most part, it was a great job. Even now, after years of not working in the field, she still thinks fondly of it. But everything changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. Like many others, she had to leave her position and find something else to do. But it wasn’t a problem to Célia, quite the opposite — it was an opportunity to work on her hobby — motorcycle mechanics.

She’s been riding a motorcycle for years and dreamed of working in races and helping race teams to win. Célia found herself in this new world of mechanics. But just working in races wasn’t enough, Célia thought of how to improve her career and benefit race drivers more.

That’s when she came across a course in CNC machinery and custom part printing. She knew right away it was the future and right path because each motorcyclist wanted custom parts for their motorcycles, and CNC machining was the way to go. She was engrossed in her work and eager to show the world that a woman can successfully do a job in a male-dominated field.

A search for a new career after 13 years

Célia had an exciting career. She loved prosthodontics and mechanics. But the driving force in her decision to look for something new was her age. She was approaching her 40s, and it felt like it was the right time to continue moving and discovering new things. Also, she liked her previous job so much that she didn’t want to get bored and start hating it, so it was the moment to find something new.

To get inspired, she attended Portuguese Women in Tech events, where she was matched with a mentor. Her mentor was a very motivating and inspiring woman, she explained to Célia how to create a CV, portfolio, and this newfound world for Célia was something she wanted to do herself. It was then that the mentor introduced her to No Code Institute.

From a mechanic to creating websites in just a few weeks

Right away, Célia knew that no code was something she would like to do next, so she applied to the program and waited for the reply. Her primary motivation was to learn to build websites. “At that time, I didn’t even think of building mobile apps. But websites were something that I was really curious about. Because I remember the times when building a website was very hard, and only a few people were able to do it. So when this opportunity showed up, I knew I wanted to learn more. But I had no idea what I was going to learn next.”

And when she got in, she soon realized that the course was much more than just web design and development. In each class, she discovered something new and applied it to practice. “Classes were flowing very organically. Everything made sense in the way they prepared classes. Each time I finish a class, I think, “oh, this is awesome, and it all makes sense.”

Everything was so interesting, catchy, and fun that learning seemed more like a game than an actual course. Now, Célia works with a client where she has to put her practice to work creating two websites for the company. But new challenges were just the beginning. After enrolling in the course, she got so interested in all no-code opportunities she applied to a marketing course where she’s learning new skills again.

Her new goal for herself is to combine the two and offer complete services for businesses. “Companies realize that they need an online presence, good apps, websites, and forms to reach clients. But most importantly, they need to ease their work, for instance, with automation. And it could be an opportunity for me to present my skills and connect my previous experience.“

When she speaks of No Code Institute, she notes how fast she saw her progress. “In these few weeks, my progression was huge. I’m doing things that even the people I know who work in the field say, “oh, so awesome, you’re doing all this without any experience.” It makes you feel like you’re conquering and gives you a boost to keep going. And it’s amazing that you can feel like that just in a few weeks, especially with something that doesn’t take much time. And it’s very important when you want to change your career later in life or when you have a family or other commitments.”
